The Design Process

When you’re ready to design your dream piece of jewelry, the first step is to sketch it out. If you’re not much of an artist, it’s helpful to collect photos of jewelry you love (and the sources where you found them). You’ll also want to think about what type of metal and gemstones you want in your piece.
Once the jeweler has your initial sketch, they can work on creating a 3d rendering of your jewelry concept or use CAD software to give you a more realistic idea of what your finished product will look like. At this point, you should make sure that the piece meets all of your expectations and that it’s something that you truly love.
It’s a good idea to be honest about your budget with the jeweler at this stage. You may have to make some concessions at this point, but it’s better to get everything you wanted in the end than to settle for less.
The Consultation
The consultation process allows a jeweller to understand the customer’s vision for their jewellery and the level of quality they desire. During this stage, the jeweller will ask a series of questions, review inspiration images and establish an initial plan for the piece. The jeweller may also show a few samples of their work to help the customer get a better idea of what the finished product will look like.
It is important for customers to communicate their budget and timeline clearly during this stage. Custom pieces can take time to create (from weeks to months depending on the complexity of the design), so it is best to plan ahead. This is especially true if the piece is being created for a special occasion such as a birthday, anniversary or engagement proposal.
When it comes to budget, the jeweller can provide a ballpark estimate during the consultation based on the design and materials being discussed. However, the final price will be based on the actual item.
Once the plan has been established, the jeweller will start creating a design concept. This will involve either a drawing or a computer-generated image of the finished jewellery that takes into account all of the customer’s preferences and requirements. The client can then provide feedback on the design concept and make any necessary changes.
The Casting Process
Once your design has been finalized and the model is carved or printed, it’s ready for casting. The tree can also be designed to accommodate multiple models, which allows you to produce a full run of the same style with one casting process.

Once the castings are complete, they are fired in a kiln to burn away the investment material, leaving behind a cavity that’s ready to be filled with molten gold. After the molten metal is poured into the mold, it’s cooled down through forced circulation to dissipate the heat energy, and gates and runners are designed into the core to guide the liquid to the intricate areas of the molding.
